One of the blessings of this blog is that I’m inundated with new music on a weekly basis. Some of it is fantastic and some of it just okay, but I know that, whatever I think of it, someone else put in a lot of time and effort making it. Ultimately I am very thankful that something I partake in part-time (and that’s being generous) affords me an opportunity to hear new tunes. Now that that’s out of the way let’s talk about Ryan Quinlivan aka RQ.
RQ’s new EP on Blu Mar Ten music, entitled Shadow Of, is NOT one of those “okay” releases…It’s fan-fucking-tastic. Rich soundscapes, lush atmoshpherics, precisely executed breaks. You can tell right off that this is someone that’s listened to, and been a part of, drum & bass for a long time. There’s care and effort in the title track, Shadow Of. A floaty freeform jazz riff dominates Local Motion after the break and carries over a lovely ambiance throughout. It’s a lovely digestif following his LPs, Solid Ground, from last year.
I’ve been listening to it on repeat for the last half hour. Check it out below. If it’s a thing you like BUY IT HERE!
For funsies, here’s his recent DJ Mag mix.
