If I had to divide up my musical brain it would be damn-near impossible. To me, music is more than just a casual pastime or hobby – it is quite literally the soundtrack of my life. I LOVE everything from Credence Clearwater Revival to Sonic Youth, Keith Sweat to Justin Timberlake, A Tribe Called Quest to UGK, Todd Edwards to Shy FX – with every guitar riff, rhythm & bassline taking on immensely personal connotation which, over time, become just as invaluable as the memories they represent.
So, in my effort to share – or maybe even selfishly recapture – a few of those precious moments of the last year, I thought I’d take the opportunity to put together a sampling of my very favorite tunes from one of my very favorite genres, UK Garage.
Also known as UKG or 2Step, or in its other incarnations, bassline or even broken beat, this genre holds a very special place in my heart as it has a tendency to meld the sounds of House & Jungle (both dance music staples in my world); & this collection is made up of original tracks & remixes from a host of producers like Mind of a Dragon (swoon!), Blakk Habit, & Royal Flush, all of whom have been steadily doing their part to keep the vibe alive in 2017.
While I did my best not to include too many MOAD tunes (as that deserves a whole other post in itself!), or too many garage-y sounding deep house bits, you will find plenty of both scattered about for good measure along with lots of other UKG goodies featuring the signature pitch-shifted vocals & 4-to-the-floor basslines indicative of that classic 2step sound, the tribal-flavored riddims of UK funky, & much, much more. In short, if these tunes don’t make your booty move your booty must be dead!
So sit back, turn up, & get ready to #SHIMMY, y’all.
