Welcome to 2017.
We at Shadowboxing HQ hope everyone had a fantastic holiday and New Years! All the way to the end of December there was incredible music released and January was a firebomb of amazing releases to start the year off. I am going to recap some of the releases that came at the end of the year to now. I couldn’t think of a better way to start 2017’s first B/P column so get your headphones on or speakers ready for a lot of music sure to get you amped for the year ahead. Starting off with some of the great music from the end of 2016 to a second part going into 2017, enjoy and support!!!
A-Sides – Quartz LP Sector 1-5 – Eastsides
A Sides Quartz LP was an incredible five part album he released from the summer until the end of 2016. It is a fantastic span of music and styles, many of which Drum and Bass has needed to return to decks around the world. Enjoy the straight forward musical, funky sounds of Tokiado Revision and Voices, the cool rolling vibes of Moonraker and In Reality to the dub influenced sounds of Fijoa Dub with longtime collaborator and close friend, the legendary MC Fats. Sector 5 is a remix collection of music with fresh interpretations from Spirit, Serum, Voltage, and the mighty Break.
OneMind EP 1 – Metalheadz
Mako and DLR have released the first official release of their new OneMind collaboration on the Metalheadz imprint. It is part 1of three part album in the works and if this is a taste of what is to come, it is going to be one of the best of 2017. “Early Evolution” is a MONSTER of a track done with the dynamic duo Ulterior Motive and the others are beasts as well. I am ecstatic to hear what is coming up on the next EP.
Chris.SU – Solar Eclipse EP – Eatbrain
Eatbrain has been on a roll of music and showing no signs of slowing down. Chris.SU’s Solar Eclipse is a solid EP of neuro styled rollers with SU’s trademark production elements of amazing intros and buildups. “The Arrow” is a fantastic example of classic SU you would have heard on the legendary DSCI4 label.
V/A – Dream Thief Volume 5 – Horizons
Horizons release the fifth installment of the Dream Thief series and it is a solid release of Drum and Bass with contributions from The Invaderz, SCAR, Naibu, Survey, and many more. Amoss’ “Yuzu,” Hydro and War’s very chill “Jam,” and Survey’s “Multiple Identities” are some of my favorites on this release.
Dr S Gachet – Remember The Roller Rmxs – Audio Maze
Do you remember? Heist and Bladerunner remix this all time classic.
Various Artists – Patrol The Underground LP – Patrol The Skies
Patrol The Skies has released a solid album of US dnb production entitled Patrol The Underground. Rends has a nice jump up bouncer with “Kendal Skank” and there are some great tunes on this compilation. My favorite so far is Will Miles’ “The Heavies,” which brings to mind the dubbed out Digital / Phantom Audio vibes. Excellent tune and I look forward to testing that out on a sound system.
