Garage Nation New Year’s Day 2002

Our old friend Jon has ripped and uploaded his Garage Nation tape pack from 2002 to Mixcloud and provided downloaded MP3s for those of you that want to own the files.

There are sets by all the big name DJ’s of the day including Mike “Ruffcut” Lloyd, Ramsey & Fen, Karl “Tuff Enuff” Brown, and Pied Piper. However there are also three sets by the “crews” that marked a transition in UKG…So Solid, Heartless, and Genius. That transition is very apparent when listening to Mike Lloyd’s set compared to Heartless Crew’s. They’re light years apart in both tone and style.

A lot of the scene’s progenitors could see the writing on the wall when the “crews” and their legions of MC’s started to outnumber the rest of the line-ups. Those crews and their fans started turning the raves into clashes, their young fans started to war over whose crew was better, and as such the violence increased exponentially. That turned out to be prophetic because this was the very last Garage Nation event before things completely fell apart in that scene.
