Beats & Pieces Vol 9

It’s been a few weeks since I did a release round-up so here are the new(ish) tunes you need to know about.

Angel Alanis & Adam Jay – Wishin’ You Were Here EP – Sonic Convergence – FREE DOWNLOAD

First up is a free techno EP from Sonic Convergence. In the promotional material it says that Angel Alanis is as “nice as a human teddy bear,” and that Adam Jay “is built like a plush toy and his vegan farts smell like a fresh spring breeze.” The music’s pretty badass too.

delPurr & Eraser – Fairytale/Imagine – Blu Mar Ten MusicOut Now

Slovakian duo delPurr & Eraser are two young artists breaking through on BMT Music with Fairytale/Imagine (BMT014). Fairytale draws on the tradition of Eastern European children’s stories with a brooding melancholy backbeat and haunting synths. Imagine is full-on head-space track with plenty of atmosphere and ambient piano riffs.

Queensway – Run/Healing – Blu Mar Ten MusicOut Now

Queensway is another Eastern European import making his debut on BMT Music with Run/Healing. Run has deep jazz element to its drum & bass back beats with a synthesized vocal stabs that reminds me of atmospheric tracks from days-gone-by. Healing is pure soul with the “love you give to me, will free me” vocal running through it. If drum & bass can be considered intelligent, this would be it.

Hannah Wants & Chris Lorenzo – Dappy – Food Music Group – Out Now

Earlier this week I posted the freebie from Hannah Wants & Chris Lorenzo called None A Them, which was a bass house massacre. That free tune was to promote the release of Dutty on Shadow Child and Kry Wolf’s Food Music that are both heavyweight tunes. Give a listen then pick it up on Beatport.

Justice & Metro – Oxymoron LP – Modern Urban Jazz – Releasing on April 22nd, 2013

Justice & Metro have been cranking out tunes on their Modern Urban Jazz label, in relative obscurity, since the mid-90s. It’s an outlet for their experimental brand of drum & bass. This LP follows that trend, but don’t dismiss it simply because it mixes up a lot of different sounds in the genre. As Justice put it, ““The Oxymoron LP is a total nod to our early days in rave in dodgy clubs and shady house parties in and around Luton and London….dark and light, bitter sweet, oxymorons in sound.”

Sunchase – As We Look (Teddy Killerz & Malk Remix)/Proper Things feat. Nickbee – 22:22 Records – Out Now.

The original version of “As We Look” was released 10 years ago on the classic (and now, sadly defunct) Moving Shadow imprint. Like the original the remix from Teddy Killerz and Malk is a stormer that’s been getting play from Noisia and Ed Rush. “Proper Things,” co-produced by Nickbee, builds up into a neurofunk meltdown at the break and strings you along with menace.

Breach – Jack EP – Dirtybird Records – Out Now on Beatport

From Claude Von Stroke of Dirtybird: “I had dinner with Breach in London and he told me “Hey, I have a track that is really dirtybird. I would put it out but its really sounding right for you guys.” I took this with a grain of salt but then I heard “Let’s Get Hot” and I found out he was right. It’s got the swagger and the sound. It makes girls grind their asses into boys crotches on the dancefloor. Perfect. Signed.”

Fearful – Nostromo/Tongues – Diffrent Music – Releasing on April 16th, 2013

Here’s a bit of menace for your ear holes from Fearful on Diffrent Music. “Nostromo” starts out by keeping you off-center with the staccato percussion before breaking down into utter bass darkness. “Tongues” is a straight forward jackhammer that’s really appropriately titled given the twisted vocal samples layered throughout.

The Upbeats, Noisia, & Fourward – Alone EP – Vision Recordings – Out Now

I don’t really need to say anything about this EP…it’s The fucking Upbeats & Noisia!
