On Saturday they uploaded a mix by Pete Reilly of Soul Jazz Soundsystem to coincide with the release of the cover art book Freedom, Rhythm and Sound BOOK By Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker. The set is an interesting blend of mellower jazz numbers, rare groove, and a smattering of plain old soul (and listen for that well known flute from the Beastie Boys “Sure Shot” around the 18:40 mark) that clocks in at a little over an hour.

I’ve been loving on this for a few days and it’s worthy of a share.

R.I.P Teddy P!

Helsinki’s DJ Anonymous put together these soul mixes back in 2004 and 2006, respectively. I love a good soul and r&b mix so from the day I found them they’ve been in permanent rotation on my ipod.

Volume 1:
In 2004 I did a mix of soul songs taken from albums that used to be often overlooked here just because they were so common locally. Most of them were imported in bulk as so called cut outs when the U.S. distributor deleted the title and had to get rid of remaining stock. Stylistically the mix leans towards the mellower end of seventies soul with a few slightly discoey tracks towards the end. The reception was so good that I ended up doing a second part two years later.

Volume 2:
Like Volume 1, this one deals with smooth 1970′s soul exclusively and titles that used to be common here particularly. The mix starts off slow jam style, but builds in tempo towards the end. I gotta say I was pleasantly surprised at how fresh the whole thing still sounded- I guess you can’t really go wrong with timeless jams like these.
