If you’ve been living under a drum&bass rock for the last few months, producers par excellence Blu Mar Ten are dropping their new album “Love Is The Devil” on Monday October 31st.

The album features a bit of everything in drum&bass from minimal to melodic to dancefloor stormers <del datetime="2011-10-27T15:22:22+00:00">with a couple of, what I perceived to be, downtempo tracks thrown in for good measure</del>. (A correction from BMT! @blumarten: interesting some it sounds downtempo. there’s only a 3bpm difference between any of them. the whole LP’s at the same speed!). “Made In London” is pure jungle, which Bailey has on rotation and that features, a very high, MC Rymetyme delivering the titular quote. The catchy, ethereal “Five Summers” has been heard in sets by London Elektricity, DBridge, Marky, and S.P.Y. for the last few months. Finally, I’m a sucker for vocal tunes so my personal favorites are “The Fourth” featuring vocals by Jennie Potts and the epic panty-remover, “Whisper” with Kirsty Hawkshaw.

I’ve long professed my man-love for all things BMT so I won’t bore you with that stuff again, but suffice it to say that you need to go out and BUY this album. It’s worth your hard-earned money.

Oh, I nearly forgot to mention that if you purchase the vinyl you’ll also get a CD, high quality MP3s, stickers, and the promo artwork.

The Rebirth of Cool series of 8 or so compilations (hard to tell the total number with re-releases & catalog number differences) that were first released in the early 90s under an Island Records subsidiary called 4th & Broadway in the UK. The early releases featured trip-hop, acid jazz, downtempo, dub, and breakbeat tracks. In the sixth volume of the series, however, the branched out into drum&bass by adding LTJ Bukem’s “Horizons”,DJ Pulse & Jazz Cartel’s “Street Player”, and my personal favorite Alex Reece’s “Feel The Sunshine.”

There’s a bit of a discrepancy on whether this is Volume 4 or Volume 6. The one labeled Vol. 4 was released by Island Records as catalog number 162-531 074-2 while the Fourth & Broadway version is labeled BRCD 620. The label art is the same, except for the Fourth & Broadway version included the cat. number listed above. Either way it’s the same compilation and I’ve chosen to call it Volume 6 for this post.

Earlier this year, as you doubtless know, a more-anonymous-than-most r’n’b singer called The Weeknd released a mixtape. It was called House of Balloons, and it was very, very good.

Last night, six previously unreleased tracks leaked into the internet abyss, apparently from when The Weeknd, real name Abel Tesfaye, worked with a production team called The Noise.

I’m a couple of months behind on this release, but I felt a need to share it because I get ridiculously excited when I hear something this impressive.

According to his wiki, The Weeknd, is Toronto-based R&B singer Abel Tesfaye, but House of Balloons is not your typical Top 40-Bullshit-R&B record. I don’t really know how to go about describing the album so, rather than give you the very poor analogy of Burial meets John Legend in falsetto (he’s eerily similar to the vocalist in Burial’s Archangel to me), I’ll let people that get paid to write reviews about music tell you everything that you need to know.

This Pitchfork Media review by Joe Colly pretty much nails it.
The group’s penchant for druggy atmospherics is mirrored in their lyrical content, which is overtly sexual, narcotics-focused, and occasionally downright frightening….What makes this whole thing work in an album context is that all the thematic and sonic pieces fit together– these weird, morning-after tales of lust, hurt, and over-indulgence (“Bring the drugs, baby, I can bring my pain,” goes one refrain) are matched by this incredibly lush, downcast music….though the image of nightlife painted by the Weeknd isn’t a place you’d ever want to live, it’s one that’s frankly very hard to stop listening to.

(I went ahead and censored the nip in the album cover below to make the post SFW)

If you’d rather listen before “buying” you can hear all the tunes on Soundcloud.
