This particular set by the great and powerful Andy “Badboy” C embodied one of the more pivotal growth spurts jungle music went through in the mid to late 1990s. It was the lead set on one of the tape packs released by Telepathy from their series of drum n bass events in the UK, and went down in infamy as the set that put Skibadee’s name on the mouths of US drum n bass listeners.

Although we had previously gotten tastes of Stevie Hyper, most of us were used to more minimal toasting as per the styles of GQ, 5ive-O, Moose, Det, MCMC, and others. With Skibadee came the dawn of a new era, defined by the apparent freedom from the need to breathe between stanzas. Frankly, it flew in the face of most of what we had learned as MCs, breaking most of the conventional wisdom about things like not chatting over the DJ’s mix, and that the MC was the facilitator and secondary, and not the focal point of the set.

[ DOWNLOAD ]

For nostalgia purposes only, I went ahead and gave the first side a listen while trying to type this out. I had to shut it off as I could barely hear myself think. Although at the time Skibadee and his MCing style were quite a bit of a novelty, even with my own 10+ year career as an MC in the 1990s and early 2000s I find this to be pretty unlistenable. Regardless, it’s certainly one for the archives, and needed to be pulled out and posted.

I’ve tossed around the idea of a super jungle post for awhile and finally decided that it needed to happen. So I spent about five hours pooling a few of my favorite old school jungle sets from the last decade that I feel are really worth sharing. You can either download the sets individually from the links below, or you can yank them all as two big ass zip files at the bottom of the post.

The audio varies because of the age of the recording or the original source material. Some are encoded at really high bit-rates while others might have some hiss and pop. However all of the sets fall into the range of “good” to “great” sound quality.

**Note – Added the missing Kenny Ken studio mix and the second part of LTJ Bukem’s ’95 Essential Mix. Cheers to Mikey Syphon for correcting the Bukem mix and providing the first half.

Someone took the time to rip every set from a Telepathy tape pack that was recorded on February 25th, 1994. The sound varies from rip to rip, but it’s an awesome piece of jungle nostalgia. The zip file is a whopping 630mb with 14 separate mp3s each averaging about 43 minutes each.

Sets (sound quality in parentheses):
Andy C (very good)
Ash Attack (poor)
Brockie (good)
Cool Hand Flex (very good)
Devious D (poor)
Funky Flirt (fair)
Grooverider (very good)
Jumpin Jack Frost (very good)
Kemistry (good)
DJ Rap (good)
Randall (good)
Ray Keith (good)
Rodney T (fair)
Val Pachino (fair)
MCs: Stevie Hyper D, Shabba D, Det, MC MC, Fats, Fantastic

Telepathy Vol 3 – 1994

It’s pretty cool to catch Grooverider rocking ragga jungle tunes (he starts his set with Demolition Man’s “Fire”) when that’s so far from the style of music he’s known for today. If you’ve ever listened to any UK tape packs then you’ll know that these guys are notorious for playing the same tracks multiple times through out the night. However, it’s still cool to hear the classics jammed out on dubplate 16 years ago.

Stevie Hyper (RIP) seems to be the primary MC on every set, but he’s not overbearing and killing the mix. Shabba checks in on a few but he’s not the same guy you hear today chatting to hear himself talk. Fats is doing his thing over Cool Hand Flex’s set and MC MC is only featured towards the end JJ Frost’s set. As far as I can tell Det’s familiar baritone isn’t anywhere on the recordings. I’ve never heard Fantastic so I couldn’t tell you where he fits in here.

Sound Quality: poor to very good
Filetype: zip/mp3
Size: 630mb
Time: about 43 min
Bitrate: 128k
